Back to School
The countdown is on, as we enter our final weeks of summer vacation. It was such a long break this year and I hope you were able to get a good jump start on your MCBA reading.
I have read 17 nominees so far and have some early favorites.
Kizzy Ann Stamps! I had no expectations for this book, had never heard of it, and the cover didn't excite me at all. And in the best way, this book grabbed me from the beginning. I loved it! If you liked last year's Lions of Little Rock, you will enjoy this one. Kizzy is a brave girl with a strong voice, and her story is told in letters to her new teacher at an integrated school. Her dog is important, too!
I also enjoyed Hiding Out at the Pancake Palace. When Elvis Ruby, the most famous celebrity in the world and winner of TweenStar freezes onstage, his father thinks he needs a break from all the paparazzi. So he send him off to a small town in New Jersey, to work at his aunt's pancake restaurant. He changes his name and appearance, and is finally able to relax...until he meets Cecilia. Cecilia recognizes him and has a very big secret to keep. Keeping a secret is not easy.
A fun read, and it moves quickly, told in alternating chapters by Elvis and Cecilia.
I am anxious to hear which books you have loved and which you didn't! (The School for Good and Evil was not my favorite...more on that later.)
I'm really looking froward to connecting with my readers in a few weeks!

The 2015-2016 list is here!
The highly anticipated list of nominees for next year has arrived. The list includes award-winners, favorite authors and lots of new authors and stories to explore. I've been busy getting them ordered, so they will be all set to go when we return in the fall.
But don't wait until fall! Get a head start now by taking the list to your local public library and dive into some leisurely summer reading. (I love reading a good book at the beach, on the porch, at the campsite...)
Set a goal and surprise yourself by how much you read this summer.
I'll be doing the same, and will be eager to discuss all of them with you when we return in September.
Happy reading!

MCBA bookclub
The 4th and 5th grade MCBA Book Club met throughout January and February each Tuesday afternoon from 3:30-4:30 with Mrs. Mullens and Ms. Bernard. Students enjoyed tasty snacks while reading and discussing Kristin Levine's The Lions of Little Rock. There was much to discuss in the book, as students wrestled with the topic of racial segregation and learned about the Little Rock Nine. It was so much fun to be surrounded by such a group of enthusiastic readers!
On February 24th students had the opportunity to Skype with the author, Kristen Levine. They crafted very thoughtful questions and enjoyed learning more about her writing process and how the story came to be. It was a special afternoon as the readers connected with the author!
Battle of the Books
This year we had eight teams compete in the Battle of the Books as part of the MCBA action. Students formed teams, read like crazy, and wrote questions for the competition. Two teams sported 25 readers, making the competition fierce. These readers knew their stuff!
As part of our our Dr. Seuss Reading Celebration, the all-school tournament was held.
Honorable mention went to the 5th grade champions- Erin, Allie, Gabe and Lindsay
Third place to the 6th grade team: Drew, Claresse and Isabelle
Second place went to the Teacher team: Ms. Lent and Ms. Ames
and this year's Champions...the 4th grade team- "Team Red": Will, May, Aaron and Ryan!
Congratulations to all our participants!
